The first time I remember people paying attention to my singing was when I was sixteen and I sung a solo in Church. I still remember all the compliments that I got that day. Since then, I've sung at Parties, Weddings, and of course, when I'm out with my friends at a Karaoke club, they always want me to sing.

I guess I come by my singing naturally -- my Mom sings, my sister sings, and my Dad can play any instrument you put in his hands. I like most all styles of music, but since I grew up in West Virginia, I feel a little closer to Country Music.

I've performed locally here in "Mayberry", at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. And last year I sang in a local Star Search competition down in Winston-Salem. They said I won the "The Horizon Award" -- but that I had to pay $500 if I wanted my trophy. I told them, I'll wait for the real one.

I appreciate the help and encouragement that I've received from several local writers and producers here in Mt. Airy. I've recorded several of Bob Vogler's songs, and my demo CD of his songs has been played on the local radio stations, and it's being played at local restaurants.

I've been trying to work on my songwriting more, and I have several songs almost done. It's hard to let other people hear my songs, but Vickie Baker and Bob Vogler are encouraging me to do it. I really feel like something is driving me to sing, and I'm ready to do this.

I got a chance to go out to Nashville for the 1st time, in the summer of 2001, and I really loved all that I saw out there. It just made me more sure of what I want to do, but I think I need a rockin' country band to perform with. If you 'are one', or 'in one' and think we may have a fit, call Bob (710-0843), and let's set something up.

~ July 2002 ~

On July 13 was my 1st performance at Higher Connections in Pilot Mt. NC.

John Shelton played guitar for me, and it went pretty well.

Higher Connections is a local Coffee House, that welcomes new artists with an Open Mic segment.

Shortly after playing the coffee house, Bob Vogler began playing bass for me, then Fred Vogler joined the band playing drums, as well as my sister Tina Smith singing backup, and some lead work. We named the band Southern Sky, and most of my musical work since has been with this band. Check out the Southern Sky web site.

Y'all watch for me now!
